County Offers $150 Reimbursement on Mandatory Child Safety Alarms

Having passed a law this past August making it mandatory for all vehicles transporting children to have safety alarms, Palm Beach County is now offering $150 reimbursement to those who install alarms prior to April 1st. The average cost of an alarm is between $200 to $300 dollars.

The law specifies that the deadline for installing alarms is September 1st, but the county is hoping to jump start efforts with their offer.

The program is administered by the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County whose director, Tina Cartstensen, said, "It's not about the money. It's about the safety of the children,"

"Hopefully it will be an enticement or encouragement for people to get in those alarms sooner rather than waiting for the deadline," said Tim O'Connor, spokesman for the Palm Beach County Health Department.

According to county standards, the alarm must be automatically activated when the vehicle's ignition is turned on. When a driver turns off the vehicle, a voice alarm prompts him or her to walk to the back to shut it off. If forgotten, after 1-4 minutes, an external alarm goes off warning passersby that the vehicle has not been clear

Having to walk through the vehicle, the driver should be easily able to spot any child left behind.

Palm Beach County health officials will begin making inspections and asking for proof of installation after September 1st.

If a facility is in violation, the owner will receive a notice giving a seven- to 10-day period in which to become compliant with the law. If an inspector finds multiple violations, the facility can be ordered to stop transporting children.
